MBA or M.Com: Which is better?

Both MBA and M.Com are relevant degrees with importance in their respective areas. But which one is better? The simple answer is to the question is…it depends.

Let us look at a brief comparison of the courses to help aspiring graduates select the right career path.

 MBAM.Com
Scope MBA is a General course, meaning students from diverse backgrounds such as commerce, arts, science, engineering, medical etc. can opt for MBA. The course covers a wide area including, commerce, finance, marketing, HRM, production, organizational psychology and more.M.Com is a Specialized course. Only people from commerce background are suited for the course. 
Job ProfileMBAs are suited for Corporate roles. Organizations hire MBA graduates for junior to middle-level management roles. Functional areas include Finance, Marketing, HRM, Production, Economics, Accounting, Information Technology, International Business, Rural Management, Supply Chain Management, Retail Management, Business Process Management, Product Management, Brand Management and more.M.Com graduates can apply for both private and government-sectors, but generally also go for academic or research-based roles in teaching institutions. Sectors generally include finance, accounting, banking, and economics.
Career ChangeMBA degree gives the opportunity to change sectors/functional areas. For e.g. a science graduate can enter into production management or an engineering graduate can go for finance.M.Com generally does not offer flexibility for change of career direction. It is limited to Finance, Accounting and Banking sectors.
Teaching MethodologyMBA focuses on theory and practice. It gives emphasis on training, acquiring skills and real-world applications. MBA also provides opportunities for soft-skills, communication and team working skills development.M.Com pedagogy is theory-oriented. Although it covers soft skills but there is relatively less emphasis on these aspects.
StructureMBA is divided into 4 semesters.M.Com usually follows yearly pattern.
Add-on CoursesMBA is a standalone course. Generally no other qualifications are required by recruiters. But graduates should go for certifications, short courses, workshops etc to constantly upgrade themselves. Students can go for CFA, CMT or FRM to add global credentials to the profile.If you are pursuing CMA, CFA or CA then it would be a good advantage for you to have a postgraduate degree such as M.Com. For career in academics, PhD and UGC-NET are also required.
Full Time/Part TimeMBA is usually a full-time course. Experienced candidates can for  part-time or Executive MBAs, but for freshers it is better to give full time commitment to the courseM.Com can be done as a full-time or part-time/distance course.
CostGenerally MBA is more expensive than M.Com. But it has a good ROI and better career growth prospects. Usually post-MBA salary increase varies from 70-200%. Also MBA gives the opportunity to climb up the corporate ladder to senior managerial roles.M.Com is generally cheaper than MBA but its ROI is also lesser in terms of salary increase and career growth.

Both MBA and M.Com provide excellent career opportunities. Choosing the right career path is a decision based on your aptitude and area of interest.
