The reality of Government Jobs in Commerce Stream

Many students believe that commerce stream is not suitable for government jobs, say as compared to Science and Arts streams. Is this belief correct? Let us explore the reality of Government jobs in commerce stream.

Industries

Commerce jobs are not limited to Banks, Accounting firms or Financial Institutions.  There are a variety of industries such as Medicine, Astrophysics, Oil Exploration, Defense, Agriculture, Education, Management, Nuclear Energy, Shipyards etc which employ people from Commerce background.

Types of Government Jobs

Broadly, there are four categories of jobs in the public sector.

  1. Central Government (Railways, Postal Department, Armed forces, Police, Income Tax Dept. etc.)
  2. State Government. (State police, Electricity Boards, Municipal Offices, PWD etc.)
  3. Government. Undertakings – State /Central (like NTPC, Public Sector Banks etc.)

There are a wide variety of positions which commerce students can apply for. Some of these are:

  3. Operations Manager
  4. Stock Broker
  5. Investment Analyst
  6. Senior Accounts Officer/Manager

Qualifying Examinations

For government jobs, candidates need to clear examinations (along with the requisite educational qualifications such as B.Com, M.Com etc.). Some of the government examinations are:

  1. SSC/CGL (SSC Combined Graduate Level Exam)
  2. IBPS (Institute of Banking Personnel Selection Probationary Officers Exam)
  3. SBI PO (State Bank of India Probationary Officer Exam)
  4. RBI Grade B Exam (for candidates interested in economics)
  5. RPF (Railway Protective Force exam)
  6. Indian Defense Accounts Service Exam
  7. Railways (Railway Recruitment Board Exam)
  8. RPSC (Junior Accountant, Statistical Officer, Computer)
  9. UPSC examinations (including IAS, IFS, IPS and other central government services)
